CEDAR RAPIDS - Some dreams can be complete nightmares, while others are sweet as chocolate.

Upper Iowa's Travis Eggers had one of the latter Friday afternoon.

After winning his opening match at the 2008 Division II national wrestling championships at the U.S. Cellular, Eggers, a sophomore, retired to his hotel room to take a nap.

He fell asleep and had the most vivid dream he can remember.

It all had to do with winning and becoming an all-American.

Eggers dream came true as he routed Mercyhurst College's Andy Lamancusa, 15-1, in the quarterfinals, joining teammate Tyler Mumbulo as the only members of the Peacock's six-man contingent to reach the semifinals.

"After the first session I went back to my hotel room just thinking I wanted to go right then and there, get it out of the way," said Eggers. "But I fell asleep, had a dream that I beat him and became an all-American. That was the greatest feeling.

"When I got back here (to the arena), I was all business. I was like I'm not going to let anybody take this away from me and I went out there, fought and didn't let him get close to taking that away from me."

Eggers opened the day with 7-4 win over Neil Samples from Western State University.

Against Lamancusa, the match was never in doubt as Eggers controlled the action from start to finish.

Eggers said much of his motivation came from a disappointing 1-2 tournament he had last season in his first trip to nationals.

"I remember losing in this round (the quarterfinals) and then getting beat out and remembering how bad that felt," he said. "This year I used that to inspire me … know how that felt and I wasn't going to let that happen to me again."

Eggers advances to face two-time national champion Antonio Guerra.

Mumbulo, an all-American last year at Nebraska-Kearney, had a more exciting journey to the semifinals.

Mumbulo fell behind Arsenia Barksdale of Adams State in the first period of their quarterfinal match, but used superior conditioning to rally for a 8-6 victory.

Mumbulo scored a decisive takedown on the edge of the mat with 42 seconds left and rode out Barksdale for the victory.

"Coach always tells us to train for 10 minutes and we'll be ready to go for seven minutes," said Mumbulo. "I knew once I got going I wasn't going to stop and he wasn't going seven minutes and I was.

"I just wanted to keep going after him because I knew he would break. Coach just kept on yelling go, go, go because he can't stop you."

Mumbulo scored a major decision in his first match, 8-0, over Caleb Hulse of Central Missouri.

He will face Minnesota-Mankato's Nick Smith in the semifinals.

Eggers and Mumbulo's success marked a disappointing day for Upper Iowa as they are the only two Peacocks who remain standing.

Tee Adams lost both of his matches at 149, while Mitch and Matt Norton, along with Dan Goodson all finished one victory short of all-American status.

Minnesota-Mankato with seven of its eight qualifiers, including five semifinalists, lead the team race by a nine points over Nebraska-Kearney, 66 1/2 to 57 1/2.

The difference in the margin is the Mavericks scored 12 bonus-point victories.

Pittsburgh-Johnstown is third with 51, and also has five semifinalists.

That fact scares Mavericks' head coach Jim Makovsky.

"I wish Pittsburgh-Johnstown would leave," laughed Makovsky. "They wrestle really hard and if you watch them wrestle they are poised. They don't get rattled.

"I thought we were a little tight in the first round, but I thought we were much looser this round. We were going after bonus points."

Makovsky especially liked how 141-pound sophomore Travis Elg bounced back from a first-round lost to score a pair of pins in the consolation rounds.
