Game notes: Omaha comes into Waterloo fresh off a win over Chicago Thursday night. The Lancers won their first three games of the USHL season before losing, 5-2, to Fargo last Saturday. Fargo just happens to be the team visiting Waterloo Saturday. The Black Hawks are looking to erase a 9-1 drubbing handed to them by Sioux City last Friday. It was Waterloo's worst lost since a 11-0 thumping it suffered Feb. 28 of last year to Green Bay. The Hawks are hoping the loss turns into a wake-up call like it was last year. Waterloo won its next game after the 11-0 defeat, the first of seven consecutive victories. Head coach P.K. O'Handley sort of worked the team out both Saturday and Sunday. Saturday, O'Handley and his staff held individual meetings and dealt with some quality control issues. Sunday, he made the entire team park their vehicles at Young Arena and he bussed them to his house, where the team spent 12 hours participating in team building exercises. Nobody was excluded from the team building, including O'Handley himself. The Hawks named Brock Montpetit captain, with Dan Sova and Derek Arnold serving as assistant captains. Rookie Scott Wamsganz has committed to Colorado College. The 6-foot-4 forward from Anchorage, Alaska, was selected by the Black Hawks in the second round of the 2008 Futures Draft (21st overall). He joins former Black Hawks Mike Testwuide and Joe Howe on Colorado College's roster.
Black Hawks coach P.K. O'Handley:
On the team building, "We tried to make something positive out of a pretty big negative. Whether we did that or not, we will see. The captains feel like we are heading in the right direction."
On the loss, "A lot of things didn't go right. To pinpoint one thing, I don't know if you can do that. It was disastrous from start to finish. That is unacceptable. Positionally, we have to play better from the goal on out. Key players haven't been key players other than negatively. I hate saying support players, but there is a lot of watching going on rather than acting. That can't continue, either."
Next up: Fargo, Saturday, 7:05 p.m., at Young Arena.
