OMAHA, Neb. - On the wall outside of the University of Northern Iowa volleyball office is a display with some of the storied program's greatest accomplishments.

That wall will be getting a facelift following Saturday's Missouri Valley Conference tournament finals where 20th-ranked UNI clinched its league-leading 14th MVC championship with a 26-28, 25-19, 25-11, 25-18 win over Wichita State.

The victory extended the nation's second-longest win streak to 28 and gave 30-2 Northern Iowa its first 30-win season since 2002 and ninth in school history.

With the emergence of 25-point sets, rally scoring and parity in the volleyball ranks, a 30-win season may have seemed far-fetched when the Panthers' achievement display was built.

"We have slots for a bunch of different things," UNI head coach Bobbi Petersen said. "One of the things is a 30-win season, and we didn't leave space for another 30-win season because it's just something that doesn't happen. ...

"It's special, there's no doubt about it. It's just a credit to this team and what they've been able to do all season long."

As has been the Panthers' signature this season, everyone had a had in UNI's attack Saturday at D.J. Sokol Arena. Michelle Burow finished with 15 kills. Beth Discher (13 kills), Shannon Aschoff (11), Krista DeGeest (9) and Amy Braun (9) were also major offensive factors.

After splitting the first two sets, the Panthers took control of the match with an impressive third-set effort. Six different attackers combined for 15 kills to one hitting error for UNI as it jumped to a 15-3 lead and out-hit Wichita State (25-6) .560-.125.

"We didn't really feel comfortable," Wichita State libero Melissa Granville said. "I think everything was so fast in their transition that we just couldn't get back on defense and get digs."

Given the timing and competition, set three was one of the Panthers' most dominant single-set performances of the season.

"I felt like we were not satisfied with games one and two," said UNI setter Bre Payton, who dished out 48 assists and was named captain of the all-tournament team. "Going back to our game plan, I think we executed that really well and we did what we needed to do."

Wichita State, playing for the third time in as many days, was unable to muster much of a rally in set four. UNI took a 16-8 lead on a Discher kill, and Discher converted the Panthers' second match point with another kill, sending the team into celebration.

"We watched a lot of tape on these guys, and I think they might have played their best match of the year," Wichita State head coach Chris Lamb said. "It was a complete performance offensively and defensively."

The Shockers looked especially tough early on when they won a closely contested opening set that saw nine ties and four lead changes. Each team fought off two set points before Emily Stockman set up the Shockers' final set point with one of her team-high 15 kills.

Despite facing a set deficit for the first time in three matches against Wichita State, UNI remained unfazed.

"Honestly, I felt like we were still in control," Burow said. "We were making mistakes that I thought we could fix."

In set two, UNI recovered by going on a 12-6 run to take a 20-14 lead. DeGeest had three kills during the run. She was also a factor at the net with a team-high eight block assists.

UNI recorded its second-highest block total of the season, out-blocking Wichita State 12-5. During the tournament, the Panthers' held a combined 21-9 advantage in blocks over the MVC's top two blocking teams.

The win capped a perfect 20-0 season for UNI against league opponents.

"It's hard to imagine it to be honest, because of the parity in our conference," Petersen said. "I don't think any matches ever came easy to us. It was always a battle, and I just think it shows the toughness of our kids and the ability to stick together and have different people stepping up on different nights."
