What happens when you ask a lot of questions? You end up selling over two million albums, winning Artist of the Year at the Gospel Music Awards, and performing hundreds of shows all across the world. Frontman John Foreman of Switchfoot writes the band's songs from deep questions he has about life and how Christians should live in the postmodern world. He once said in Christianity Today, "I ask myself questions and sing about it. A lot of these songs are like an oyster. A bit of sand gets in and it's abrasive and troublesome. The oyster starts working on it and a few years later you open it up and there's a pearl in there. That's what I do in my songs - chew on the more abrasive parts of my life."
The guys in Switchfoot began writing and recording music in college and would sell their cassettes for one dollar at the very few concerts they held. Somehow, one of those demo tapes ended up in the hands of Grammy-nominated producer Charlie Peacock, and the college kids flew out to Nashville to begin recording. They have now evolved from a garage band to one of the hottest shows on the scene both in Christian and in Mainstream music.
Switchfoot's fourth studio album "The Beautiful Letdown" absolutely exploded onto the Christian and secular music markets with hits like "Dare You to Move," "This is Your Life" and "Meant to Live." The music was welcomed by more listeners because of the relevance communicated throughout the entire collection. They offer truth in a way that can be understood.
Switchfoot's brand new project "Nothing is Sound" is now on store shelves across America. This group of songs was recorded on the road because the guys have been so busy traveling and performing over 400 shows in the last two years. You would never guess this CD wasn't recorded in a professional studio as the band still plays music with the perfect mix between metal and pop and appeals to listeners of different ages. These accomplishments group Switchfoot with bands such as U2, Coldplay and even the Beatles.
Success has already graced "Nothing is Sound," with first single "Stars" hitting the top of the Christian Music charts. Switchfoot classifies itself as a rock 'n' roll band, but this CD has variety including mellower tunes like "Golden" and "We Are One Tonight." Switchfoot still offers music with a catchy tune and songs like "Happy is a Yuppie Word" is sure to get stuck in your head. "Politicians" addresses the fact that our leaders will make mistakes and we are to submit to a higher authority. Foreman even takes a gaze into the future and to life after death in songs like "The Fatal Wound" and "The Blues."
Switchfoot continues to mature in its sound and its lyrics with each new project. The band has already had an incredible impact in the mainstream music industry and the stage is set for Switchfoot to continue its success for years to come.
Danette Karlsen is heard weekends on The New 89.1 The Spirit (AM 850).
