There's a movie out in theaters right now that features three-time Oscar nominee Billy Bob Thornton and five-time Oscar nominee Susan Sarandon. Strangely, the film's star is a guy who has been nominated for MTV Movie and Teen Choice awards-Seann William Scott. "Mr. Woodcock," as the name would suggest, is far from an Oscar-worthy movie, but is it even worthy of an MTV Movie Award?

John Farley (Scott) is a famous author who has written a self-help book about letting go of your past. A good part of the pain in his past was caused by the emotional abuse of his former gym teacher, Mr. Woodcock (Thornton). While on his book tour, Farley gets word that his Nebraskan hometown is honoring him that week. Upon returning home, he learns that his widowed mother (Susan Sarandon) is now dating Woodcock, forcing him to come face-to-face with his past all over again. Leading up to a key-giving ceremony, John contemplates ways to free his mother from Mr. Woodcock and has to weigh his Midwestern family life against Hollywood fame.

Oftentimes with movies like "Woodcock," you will see all the film's good gags in the previews. Surprisingly, this is not one of those movies. The previews mostly showcase the movie's cliche moments, rather than the film's true belly-shaking scenes. Although the movie has a lot of scenes that can be found in nearly every modern comedy, it still retains a speck of originality that makes it charming.

In comedies like "Woodcock" it is important that the actors stay true and believable along the way. And it is a testament to Thornton, Sarandon, Scott and Amy Poehler (as Scott's agent) that their characters are played perfectly. Billy Bob Thornton completely swallows this role up and portrays a sadistic gym teacher flawlessly.

During the times that this movie does dip into its low points filled with unoriginal material and predictability it is painfully bad. You will see scenes that you've seen in countless movies. That's a shame because those moments take away from an otherwise entertaining film.

If you're looking for something original and a little more in-depth, this may not be the choice for you this weekend. But, all in all, if you just want to get away and enjoy a carefree comedy then you should throw on your gym clothes and prepare to be schooled with "Mr. Woodcock."
