This past weekend in the Cedar Valley, we were treated to a different type of new movie release. The film "Bella" has been in some theaters since October and is now going nationwide after receiving a lot of praise. Now that we have the chance to view this film, does 'Bella' really end up being that beautiful?

Jose (Eduardo Verastegui) was once a rising star in the soccer world but now finds himself working as a chef at his brother Manny's (Manny Perez) restaurant in New York. After one of the waitresses, Nina (Tammy Blanchard), is unusually late for consecutive days, Manny fires her in front of the whole staff. Jose is appalled by this and takes it upon himself to go after her and make sure she is okay. After catching up with her, he finds out from her that she is pregnant and decides to skip work and spend the day with her. In just that one day, they find out quite a bit about each other and themselves, changing their lives forever.

The writing, direction and production of the movie itself are all very well done. It is presented to us in a manner that leaves us putting the pieces of the characters' pasts together as the plot develops. The setting of New York City gives the movie a unique backdrop as well. And the directing of the movie has an intimate feel to it. On top of all of those pluses, the actors also give powerful performances that really drive the story home.

Without prior warning, you may not know that this movie is centrally about the issue of abortion. The decisions and plot points of the movie are all laid out in a way that affect Nina's decision on whether she wants to abort the child or keep it.

Movies are always made with a purpose. Sometimes that purpose is to entertain, other times it is for profit and then there are instances in which the purpose of the film is to make a statement. And this is one of those movies.

The theme discussed in the film does not change the quality of the movie itself. But its anti-abortion statement can greatly alter your enjoyment of the movie one way or another, depending on your views about the issue.

"Bella" is still an excellent story and film that is worth seeing. If you are ready to watch a movie that attempts to make a bold statement, you are in for a lovely treat.
