WATERLOO -- Reunions in rock 'n roll are common. Comebacks are not.
Hard rockers Buckcherry managed the latter. The band, formed in 1995, went on hiatus in 2001. They regrouped a year later, swapping out two original members for three fresh musicians.
The new crew has produced three albums, including the Grammy-nominated "15." On Saturday Buckcherry will play selections from its latest record, "Black Butterfly," at a McElroy Auditorium concert. Avenged Sevenfold will co-headline the show. Special guests Shinedown and Saving Abel will also perform.
"I think it's just a really great mix of fans and music," Buckcherry frontman Josh Todd said of the tour. "When you put it all together in a package, it's a really good rock show."
Todd hopes that Buckcherry can use the concert to highlight hits from its new album including, "Cream," "Fallout," and "All of Me." The band labored over the disc's lyrics, said the singer.
"We had to follow up our most successful record and we wanted to make sure that we had all the goods," Todd said. "To do that we revisited songs -- sometimes four or five times -- and fine-tuned some things up to the very end when we went in to record. We think it really paid off."
"Black Butterfly" offers something for everyone, taking listeners, "on a journey from beginning to end," Todd said. Sandwiched between hard rock fare, like "Fallout," are tunes a little bit off the beaten path.
"We did a song called 'All of Me' that we built on kick drum and hand claps," Todd said. "It sounds very 'Beatle-y,' which was very cool for us. Songs like these aren't the norm for us, but we think they made the record better."
Tickets are $35 in advance or $40 the day of the show. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., with the concert starting at 6:30 p.m.
"It's been a great tour," Todd said. "We have fun, and so do the fans."
