The invitation speaks volumes about what the community endured over the course of about two weeks in May and June. According to a circulating e-mail message, organizers want the party to serve as a thank you "to everyone that has helped out with either the tornado or the flood or both."
In conversational shorthand, the storm on May 25 is frequently referred to as the Parkersburg tornado. And widespread flooding in June found a focal point in Cedar Rapids when thousands of homes and businesses drowned.
But New Hartford bears the unfortunate distinction of experiencing the very worst of both historic events. An EF5 tornado killed two people and flattened a good portion of the community. When Beaver Creek escaped its banks, filthy water soaked just about everything else.
In New Hartford -- as in other towns stretching from Parkersburg to Dunkerton to Hazleton to Lamont -- many volunteers showed up to help. The beauty of the gesture stems from the fact most pitched in without once being asked if they would mind lending a hand.
Residents in New Hartford apparently noticed the goodwill and intend to show their appreciation with a community event.
"We want to especially say thank you to our volunteer fire department and EMS crew. Together as a town we are neighbors working together to come back better than ever."
The party will be from 4 p.m. to midnight at the Hog House, 1416 York St.
Live music will kick things off, and organizers suggest guests bring a lawn chair. Pulled pork sandwiches will be available starting at 5 p.m. The afternoon and evening also will feature games and activities.
Since needs remain, the event also is a fundraiser. Admission is free but organizers will be accepting donations. They suggest $5 at the door. A tornado T-shirt will cost $10.
Proceeds will benefit the New Hartford Fire Department and community and may be used to replace outdoor warning sirens and other equipment damaged by the two calamities.
"Something to make us better. Either way, it's a great cause. And it's a chance to get together and be a town."
Those who can't attend can still support the effort. Write a check to the New Hartford Disaster Benefit and get it to the bank in Dike or New Hartford.
