Celebrity trumping democracy
Michael Jackson's death didn't stun me. He was young, but it's not unheard of for a 50-year-old to drop of a heart attack, especially if he's chronically overmedicated. What stunned me was the massive outpouring of television coverage.
Thomas' memory will live on
The satellite news trucks are long gone. Even the wonder at seeing a full-page photograph of coach Ed Thomas on the cover of Sports Illustrated has begun to fade.
This week Aplington-Parkersburg's baseball and softball teams returned to their fields, playing home games the night after the town's iconic football coach was laid to rest.
In the not too distant future, football players will return to Ed Thomas field and a new season will begin.
The world joined Parkersburg in grieving the loss of Thomas. Now the community is moving on, just as Thomas emboldened them to do in the wake of the tornado a year ago.
