WATERLOO - A suspended Waterloo doctor serving prison time for selling methamphetamine helped save a fellow inmate's life after the man collapsed.

Iowa Department of Corrections authorities said Mark Louviere, 51, was walking past a soccer game in the yard of the Newton Correctional Facility on Aug. 31 when one of the game's participants fell to the ground. Louviere helped medical staff by performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

Fred Scaletta, spokesman for the corrections department, said he couldn't comment on specifics of the case, such as the man's identity, because it involved medical information.Though Louviere was given 100 years in prison, he could be out in as little as 22 years because he had a plea bargain in his case.

He has a tentative release date of 2052, according to the corrections department. Prison officials have the ability to reduce an inmate's time for acts of heroism, such as saving a life, Scaletta said. Louviere received 30 days off his remaining sentence.

"It's not going to have that big of an impact," he said.

Louviere pleaded guilty in August 2007 to several meth-related charges, including conspiracy to possess more than 5 kilograms of meth with intent to distribute while in proximity of a park and while in control of a firearm. He also pleaded to violation of the drug tax stamp act.

Authorities say Louviere gave an undercover informant meth from his home in April.

Members of the Tri-County Drug Enforcement Task Force found about a pound of meth and seven firearms while searching his home on Four Seasons Drive in April 2007. They found another duffel bag with 11 pounds of meth at a neighbor's home that Louviere had been watching over. The owner did not have knowledge of the drugs, authorities said.
