CEDAR FALLS - Two University of Northern Iowa football players and one former player were arrested early Sunday for several charges in connection with a disturbance both inside and outside an event center.
Cedar Falls police were called to the Main Event Center, 4807 University Ave. , at about 2 a.m. on a report of several fights in progress. They eventually got help from Waterloo police, Black Hawk County Sheriff's deputies and the University of Northern Iowa Public Safety Department.
Officers attempted to disperse the crowds, and there were several individuals who refused to leave and their conduct incited riot conditions, police said.
The three arrested were:
- Brandon Latre Keith, 24, of 1611 W. Third St., Cedar Falls, for rioting, disorderly conduct and interference with officials acts.
-Adam Lacrea Gray Roberts, 21, of 2003 Waterloo Road, Apt. B13, Cedar Falls, for rioting, disorderly conduct and interference with official acts causing injury.
- Darrell Lee Lloyd, 22, of 1611 W. Third St., Cedar Falls, for rioting and interference with official acts causing injury.
Lt. Jeff Sitzmann said Keith charged at officers inside the business and a Taser was deployed. Keith was arrested inside, while the other two were arrested in the parking lot.
Court records state people at the event were told several times to leave the area when the disturbance broke out. When one of the people was being detained, Roberts allegedly went around police and attempted to stop the officers, records state.
Lloyd also allegedly refused to leave and kept saying he needed to help his friend, who was already in custody, records state. He tried to get around a police officer, the officer "physically directed" him away, and then Lloyd came back at the officer as if he was going to assault him, records state.
All three were starters on the UNI football team last fall. Keith, an offensive tackle, has used up his eligibility on the team. Roberts was a sophomore defensive back. Lloyd was a junior defensive back. Both Roberts and Lloyd earned Gateway Conference All Newcomer team honors. Keith received honorable mention All American honors.
Two Cedar Falls police officers were injured during the altercation. Sitzmann said one officer sustained injuries to an arm, the other to the leg. Both officers will seek further evaluation today on their injuries. Sitzmann added that no one involved in the fight or at the party reported any injuries.
No information was available on what precipitated the incident.
Rioting and interference with official acts causing injury are both aggravated misdemeanors, while disorderly conduct and interference with official acts are simple misdemeanors.
Police said the incident remains under investigation and additional information on it will be released later.
