GALENA, Ill. - Investigators found more than 70 blood stains - mostly small drops - on a Cadillac Bruce Burt allegedly used to drive Donnisha Hill to Illinois to kill her in October 2006.
Burt has admitted beating Donnisha, 13, to death with a hammer as he helped her out of the borrowed car on a gravel driveway about 10 miles east of Galena. Prosecutors allege David Damm hired Burt to kill the girl because of concerns over a sexual abuse investigation.
Damm's trial started its second week on Monday.
Anthony Heindel, a crime scene investigator for the Illinois State Police, said most of the blood found on the car was "impact stains" caused by blood spattering when the victim was hit with an object.
Most of the stains were on the exterior of the back passenger side door, he said. There were also some drops inside the front door near the latch.
The stains would have been left by blows delivered at two levels and were consistent with someone being struck while standing and while kneeling, Heindel said.
He was unable to tell how many blows were delivered, although the first strike wouldn't have sent any blood flying. He also couldn't tell how far the victim was from the door at the time of the attack.
Blood smears were also found on the driver's door frame and lower threshold of the driver's door.
Also on Tuesday, Blake Aper, a forensic scientist with the Illinois state crime lab in Rockford, said blood on the car and on a hammer recovered by police in Waterloo contained Donnisha's blood.
