CEDAR FALLS - The University of Northern Iowa football team's big homecoming win on Saturday was celebrated peacefully for the most part.

Cedar Falls and UNI police responded to an armed robbery call early Sunday a couple of blocks north of campus at 2015 Merner Ave.

Police said two female college students were sitting on a porch at about 3:15 a.m. when two black men approached, and one held out a gun and demanded their purses. The women, Brittni Storm, who lives at the address, and Erin Motz, handed over the purses. The assailants ran north toward a grassy area along Dry Run Creek.

No one was injured. Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to contact police.

Otherwise, except for a few alcohol violations, it was a quiet homecoming weekend, a UNI police spokesman said.

"All in all, except for the one incident, things went pretty well. It wasn't too bad of a day," said David Zarifis, UNI public safety director.

Most students did not congregate at the College Hill area just north of campus, the usual location on College Street for post-game festivities, because of road construction. This year the traditional homecoming parade was canceled because of the construction.

So revelers decked out in purple T-shirts and beads bounced between bars on Main Street, wishing each other "happy homecoming" following the Panthers' 31-17 win over Illinois State.
