WAVERLY - Rain, sleet or snow and, apparently, even a broken ceiling, can't thwart the U.S. mail.

The ceiling over the lobby of the Waverly Post Office, 124 Second St. SE, collapsed over the weekend, and officials have shut down front-door operations and parcel services until further notice. But post office official Patti Sorge said other business will continue as usual out of the facility and the Civic Center in Waverly.

"The workroom floor is untouched," Sorge said. "The mail will be delivered as normal."

Stamp and parcel requests are another matter. Post office employees will sell stamps and handle priority and express packages and mail out of the Waverly Room at the Civic Center, 200 First St. NE, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. today and until further notice.

Customers with parcels are being referred to post offices in Waterloo and Cedar Falls, Sorge said.

The Waverly post office will open it's back door for residents with mail on hold and for those that wish to collect mail. Post office workers will also accept mail at the dock.

Officials aren't exactly sure what caused the ceiling to give, but Sorge said rain might have been a factor. Sorge received a call from Waverly police at her home Monday afternoon about the fallen ceiling.

"Sunday night must have been the last straw," Sorge said.

Today, cleanup continues at the building, which was built in the 1930s. Cost of damages is unknown, but the roof is intact.

The Waverly Fire Department responded to the scene, but the damage had been done.

"There wasn't much we could do," Fire Chief Dave Nelson said, adding there was no fire or smoke.

The facility was closed, and no one was injured.

Sorge is optimistic the Waverly facility will be operational by the end of the week. Residents can also purchase stamps in Waverly at Hy-Vee on Fourth Street Southwest and at Meyer Pharmacy on Tenth Street Southwest.
