Voters decide area school district issues

WATERLOO -- Just who ends up in an at-large school board seat in the Starmont School District will come down to the luck of the draw after two candidates tied Tuesday night.

At-large incumbent Laura Morine of Lamont and challenger Tim Hamlett of Arlington tied with 126 votes apiece, according to unofficial results from the Fayette County Auditor's Office.

The winner will be decided when Fayette County supervisors draw lots later this week, according to the auditor's office.

Voters in school districts renewed physical plant and equipment levies, along with those in the Northeast Iowa Community College District. Those counties include Allamakee, Bremer, Buchanan, Chickasaw, Clayton, Delaware, Fayette, Mitchell and Winneshiek.

The following is a list of contested races and ballot initiatives. Incumbents are indicated with an (i) when possible.

Allamakee

Postville -- at-large (elect one) Jamie K. Smith, Postville (i), 129; Christine Enyart, Postville, 45

Benton

Belle Plaine -- at-large (vote for two): Mike Bachelder, Belle Plaine (i), 89; Marie Stratford, 84

Bremer

Denver -- at-large (elect two): Dale Schneider (i), 163; Kerri Wilson (i), 153; Darrell Morrow, 41

Sumner -- at-large (elect one): Tyler Larsen, Sumner, 114; Jim Kleitsch, Sumner, 82

Buchanan

East Buchanan -- Voters approved a physical plant and equipment levy of up to $1 per $1,000 of assessed taxable property valuation by a margin of 231 yes to 80 no votes.

The levy will last five years and be used for building and maintaining facilities and purchasing equipment.

Butler

Aplington-Parkersburg -- Director District 3 (elect two): Melody Nevenhoven, Aplington, 192; Calvin Voss, Parkersburg (i), 173; Todd Cooper, Aplington, 104

Fayette

Oelwein -- at-large (elect one): David Eick, Oelwein, 238; Kellie Henniges, Oelwein, 177

Voters approved a physical plant and equipment levy of up to $1.34 per $1,000 of taxable assessed valuation by a margin of 329 to 93.

The levy will last 10 years and be used for building and maintaining facilities and purchasing equipment.

Valley -- Voters approved a change in the way school board members are elected by a margin of 91 to 56.

The board was elected by five separate districts, which will all now be at-large.

Floyd

Charles City -- at-large (elect two) Matt Spading, Charles City (i), 429; Ralph Smith, Charles City (i), 367; Barbara Carstens, Charles City, 181

Rudd-Rockford-Marble Rock -- A physical plant and equipment levy was approved, 88 to 30.

The levy is for $.67 per $1,000 of taxable property valuation. The funds will be used for building and maintaining facilities and purchasing equipment.

Hardin
