SHELL ROCK -- Fourth of July festivities will kick off Wednesday in Shell Rock.

Food, live music, fireworks, a carnival and athletic tournaments are on the itinerary for this year's celebration, which runs through July 6.

Shell Rock's famed fireworks show, always held on July 4, can more than triple the town's population of 1,300, Mayor Larry Young said. Fireworks are slated to go off at 10 p.m. behind Shell Rock Elementary School.

"And people have kind of come to know exactly when they are going to be from year to year," Young said.

A beer tent will be part of festivities Wednesday through Saturday but the following Sunday is dedicated to families, Young said.

Festivities will make use of new tennis, sand volleyball and basketball courts at McCague Park. The City added the athletic facilities within the last year as part of the Parks Galore and a Whole Lot More project, Young said.

Ages 16 and up can pre-register for the free athletic tournaments on Thursday from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at City Hall or from 9-11 a.m. July 5 and 6 at McCague Park. Or call (319) 885-6555.

Most Fourth of July activities will take place downtown or at McCague Park.
