ST. ANSGAR -- According to everyone who knew Therese Halbach, young people held a special place in her heart and she knew education was an ingredient for success in their lives.
Consequently, Halbach donated many years of her life to St. Ansgar Dollars for Scholars, which raises money to provide scholarships to students.
Halbach's life was cut short by cancer. She died Jan. 29, 2003.
Before her death, Halbach asked her husband, Ed, to continue her work on behalf of young people.
With help and support from friends, Ed established the Therese Halbach Education Memorial.
The corporation is a nonprofit group designed to fund education and student grants within area school districts.
The organization established an annual golf tournament in 2004 at the Cedar River Country Club in Adams, Minn. Since then, the Therese Halbach Educational Memorial has awarded more than $16,000 in college scholarships to Iowa and Minnesota students.
Check-in at this year's tournament will begin at 7:30 a.m. Saturday at Cedar River. Play will begin at 9. The event is a four-person scramble with a shotgun start.
Halbach's organization also sponsors Therese and Friends, a cookbook including many of her favorite recipes along with more than 800 others provided by family, friends and acquaintances.
Cost is $15 plus $5 for postage and handling. To order, send a check payable to THEM, P.O. Box 235, Stacyville, IA 50476.
