PLAINFIELD - The public library will remain closed as board members search for a director.
The building at 723 Main St. temporarily shut its doors about a week ago after a recent hire, librarian Laurie Bias, resigned.
Keeping the library open without a director seemed too much to ask of volunteers and one part-time employee, said Brittney Lentz, president of the board of trustees.
"We thought it was a good option for now," Lentz said. "We know it's hard for the community right now."
The library board hired Bias after director Martina Harper resigned in early August, Lentz said. Harper served the Plainfield library for about five years.
Opal Lynes volunteered at the library for a decade. She said Harper was talented at reading and singing aloud with kids.
"She did a super job at story hour," Lynes said. " … They would do 'The wheels on the bus go round and round … '"
The library director's job is a 25-hour a week position. Mayor Tim Neil said Harper made a career change to work a full-time job.
Board members will accept resumes through Tuesday for the director's position, Lentz said, and will start reviewing applications Wednesday. Lentz said the group would prefer a candidate with library experience. Computer skills are required, however.
Jean Thompson of Plainfield said the public library is an important community facility for residents young and old. Her 10-year-old grandson learned to love the building because of Bias' enthusiasm.
Thompson applauded a new Study Buddy program, which Bias created. Thompson added Bias gave youth a positive way to use their time.
"The kids absolutely adored her," she said.
