FAYETTE -- The city's benefactor is again stepping up, donating money to keep several projects moving.

Philanthropist David Bolger, a businessman in New Jersey, recently donated $20,000 to Fayette, the latest in a long list of contributions.

The most recent gift will be divided. Of the total, $5,000 will go toward carpeting for the Fayette Public Library; $10,000 for a sidewalk and additional landscaping on the north side of the Fayette Opera House. The historic landmark will also get curtains in the basement, roll-up doors for the kitchen and folding chairs.

Fayette County Tourism will receive $4,000 to replace carpet in the Little Red House tourism center and to buy racks for brochures. And Watermelon Days will receive $1,000 to help organizers fund events.

Bolger has looked fondly on the town for many years, though he never lived there. His first association with Fayette came in 1964 when he solicited business for his investment banking company.

Bolger later helped Upper Iowa University, which is based in Fayette, get its financial house in order. The 11-year effort is credited with ensuring the college's survival.

During the past three decades, Bolger has given more than $4 million to the city for various projects. He is known as the honorary mayor of Fayette.
