DES MOINES -- Vision Iowa board members may not know a hubba or a grind rail when they see it, but they still voted Wednesday to fund a skate park in Aplington.

The $55,000 project will include amenities such as a fun box-pyramid, a quarterpipe and a kinked grind rail. Though those terms mean something to the skateboarding students pushing the park, they were lost on Vision Iowa folks.

"What's a hubba and grind? Should we be funding that?" joked Andrew Anderson, chairman of the board.

The board voted to provide a $20,000 Community Attraction and Tourism grant to help the project. But the park will only get state dollars once local fundraising efforts are completed. Anderson also wants the city of Aplington and Butler County to kick in more money.

Residents in Conrad also received welcome word the state will back its $1.85 million project.

Vision Iowa awarded a $200,000 CAT grant for the Conrad Public Library. The community is building a 9,000-square-foot facility providing traditional services, enhanced learning areas, upgraded technology and cultural and educational programs.

The award is contingent upon the organizers collecting an additional $75,000 within six months.

Another project in the Cedar Valley is awaiting final word on its possible CAT award. Grundy County Campgrounds' request for more than $194,000 was sent into negotiations.

The $394,000 project includes construction of 64 asphalt camping pads, picnic areas, fire rings and restrooms at Grundy County Lake south of Dike near U.S. Highway 20.

Two Waverly CAT requests remain at the starting gate.

City leaders and Wartburg College officials are seeking a $3 million grant for 200,000-square-foot wellness center designed to serve the community and school. The estimated cost is a $31 million,

And the Waverly Health Center is seeking $280,000 for a rooftop garden conservatory. The estimated cost is $997,000.

Both Waverly projects will be discussed by the board next month.
