DECORAH - Douglas Knick, Luther College assistant professor of education, will present a Paideia Text and Issues lecture April 3 at 7 p.m. in the Luther Center for Faith and Life Recital Hall on the campus of Luther College (http://www.luther.edu).
The lecture, "Got Texts? Or Texts Got You?" will examine what it means to be defined by a text.
The program is open to the public with no charge for admission.
Knick's lecture will focus on the value of reading a text more than 485 years old in relationship to living in the 21st century. He will disucuss how Martin Luther's "The Freedom of a Christian," written in 1520, is a text that can challenge, unnerve, agitate and rouse the reader while simultaneously being able to soothe and comfort the reader.
Knick holds the bachelor of arts degree from Gustavus Adolphus College and the bachelor of science from Mankato State University. He holds the master of divinity degree from Luther Seminary and the doctoral degree in education from St. Thomas University.
Knick has served as a parish pastor for 10 years and taught social studies at the secondary education level for 10 years.
Knick is the founder and director of the Delta Institute, which promotes equity, peace and justice in personal lives and at local and global levels. The institute hosts workshops on power inequities, nonverbal behaviors, learning environments, alternatives to force and control, and a summer equine camp for "at risk" children ages 8-18.
A national liberal arts college with an enrollment of 2,550, Luther offers an academic curriculum that leads to the bachelor of arts degree in 60 majors and pre-professional programs. For more information about Luther visit the college's website: http://www.luther.edu.
