FAIRBANK - Little Island Childcare Center is planning a ribbon cutting and open house to celebrate recent improvements.

The event will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Oct. 6. The center is at 101 Fourth St. N.

Organizers credited grant money from the Black Hawk County Gaming Association for being able to buy classroom furniture, toys and supplies. With the grant, teachers created new lessons, developed thematic units and implemented curriculum.

A grant from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources also allowed the center to install new rubber safety tiles on the playground. The project also got a boost from the Buchanan County Foundation, Butler County REC, Fairbank Community Club and many volunteers.
