FAYETTE -- The city learned recently the cost to bring its wastewater treatment facility up to state standards could be $1.2 million.
In approving their engineer's proposal to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, officials also listened to an overview of what is needed because the agency is adopting more stringent regulations regarding effluent released into the state's waterways.
Fayette's treatment plant was built in 1986 and updated in 1998. Even so, additional aeration is needed in the storage pond, engineer Gary Sejkora stated in his report.
Modifications to a cell would recycle material through the treatment plant to better disinfect the effluent, he added. The upgrade would allow officials to designate the plant as a continuous discharge facility, which would meet DNR standards.
One concern, however, was how long the city could expect to remain in compliance once the modifications are in place.
"Part of what we're doing is replacing 22-year-old parts at the treatment plant," Sejkora said.
"The Volga River is one of the more pristine rivers except during heavy rains," he added. "Being good citizens, I'm sure you feel good about keeping it that way."
Council members also approved a request to begin the application process for a Community Development Block Grant to help fund the project. The city hopes to qualify for the maximum $500,000 allocated for municipal wastewater improvements.
