DECORAH - The City Council's community betterment and economic development committee will meet in a few days to discuss a recent flood study completed by the U.S. Geological Survey.
The session will begin at 6 p.m. Aug. 4.
Council members also will discuss participation in the National Flood Insurance Program.
Officials from the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources will attend as well.
"This has been an important year to be aware of what's possible with flooding," said Karen Tjossem, who chairs the committee.
She added a meeting in January ended with many unanswered questions when the group considered a flood insurance ordinance.
"Having people available from the DNR and the FEMA will give us a chance to get a clear picture of what's involved in the program," Tjossem said.
The City Council tabled the issue earlier this year but conducted a public hearing on a proposed ordinance establishing flood plain management requirements necessary for the city to participate in the program. After a discussion the council delayed action pending review of the flood plain study.
Oversize maps showing boundaries of the 100-year and 500-year flood plains, 100-year floodway and a special flood hazard area identified in 1976 by FEMA will also be available to assist property owners.
