WAVERLY - A 40-year-old man is facing sexual assault charges after an alleged incident at the Red Fox Inn.

Waverly police arrested Hayward Carter of Payson, Ill., Wednesday in Waverly. He is charged with second-degree sexual abuse, a Class B felony, and with failure to register as a sex offender, an aggravated misdemeanor.

Carter reportedly displayed a dangerous weapon during the alleged attack.

According to court records available online, Carter was convicted in New York for criminal sexual assault involving force. The victim in that case was 35 years old. Carter was 25 at the time.

The incident in Waverly remains under investigation. Carter was taken to the Bremer County Jail.
