PRESTON - A Decorah doctor who admitted stealing clothes last year from locker rooms at Fillmore Central and Mabel-Canton high schools learned his punishment Monday.
Judge Robert Benson sentenced Dr. David Heine, 39, to a $3,000 fine, 250 hours of community service and 90 days in jail, according to the Post-Bulletin in Rochester, Minn. The judge suspended the jail time.
Heine, 39, pleaded guilty Oct. 30 to three misdemeanors - two for trespassing on school property and one for theft. Three other charges were dismissed.
During sentencing, Heine's attorney, Bill Mauzy of Minneapolis, said the doctor suffered from "impulse control disorder." Mauzy said the condition was brought on by the stress of working at two clinics while his wife had cancer.
The complaints, filed June 11, allege Heine went into boys locker rooms on separate occasions without permission. A videotape at Fillmore Central captured a man fitting Heine's description entering the room empty-handed but leaving with a black duffel bag. A witness in the building also identified the doctor in a line-up, according to the newspaper.
Heine was president of Decorah Clinic Physicians and chief medical officer for Winneshiek Medical Center. He took a medical leave from the clinic in June and resigned from the Mayo system Nov. 12. He is no longer listed on the staff of the Winneshiek center in Decorah.
