JESUP - The sawdust will fly at this year's Farmers Days celebration.
The Fred Scheer Lumberjack Show, a nationally renowned exhibition, will help make the 92nd annual event memorable with three shows Saturday.
Sheer's lumberjacks have toured the nation for 25 years. The performers have been featured on numerous national programs, including ESPN's Great Outdoors Games and ABC's Wide World of Sports.
Allan Wright, president of Farmers Day, said he first saw the lumberjacks at the Eastern Iowa Sports Show in Cedar Falls. Their appearance in Jesup is a first for Farmers Days.
The Lord's Warrior Drill Team Color Guard and Drumline of Mount Carmel Missionary Baptist Church in Waterloo will participate in the annual parade Saturday. The team will also perform after the parade.
Other attractions, including a myriad of local bands and the annual play, will also attract hundreds of people to the Buchanan County community.
One of the best parts of the entertainment at Farmers Days is the cost, Wright said.
"It's all free," he said.
Wright said this year's celebration begins the lead-up to Jesup's sesquicentennial celebration in 2010.
"It's a preview of things that are going to happen," he said.
The festival began as a way to celebrate Jesup's agrarian heritage and was originally held around harvest time. But when county fairs and other celebrations started, the event was pushed earlier in the year, Wright said.
