CHARLES CITY -- The YMCA -- celebrating 100 years in the community -- is planning to break ground on a $2 million addition before the centennial ends.
Bids on the 11,000-square-foot addition will be advertised in April, Executive Director Lance Lasher said.
The addition will include a wellness center; day care and child care room; game room; lobby and office; and handicapped-accessible locker rooms.
The wellness center will house circuit training equipment, treadmills, elliptical machines, exercise bikes and free weights. The game room will feature pool and foosball tables.
Construction could begin in the summer, but architects suggest the project could take up to 10 months to complete, Lasher said. That means the ribbon-cutting ceremony won't take place until after the centennial year is over.
The Y has raised $1 million in cash and pledges for the project, Lasher said. The organization will borrow the rest.
The Y has been at 800 Hulin St. since 1971. The building used to be an elementary and was constructed in 1950.
