FAYETTE - A 4-year-old Fayette girl is hospitalized at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City after being trapped Sunday beneath an overturned canoe on the Volga River.

Octavia George was rescued by other people on the outing and given CPR at the scene. Her parents, Nigel and Julie George, and 3-year-old brother, Isaac, were transported to Palmer Lutheran Health Center in West Union, where they were treated and released.

The girl was transported by helicopter to Iowa City. She is listed in critical condition.

Five other members of the party continued down the Volga River following the rescue and were checked by Northeast Iowa Ambulance staff members when they reached an exit point. There were no other injuries.

Authorities were called to the area at about 2:30 p.m. after receiving a cell phone call about a possible drowning on the Volga River. The reporting party did not know where they were, except that the canoe party was between Big Rock Country Club and the Volga River Recreation Area. After a search, the people were found inside the Volga River Recreation Area.

Several agencies responded to the incident, including the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, Fayette Fire Department and Fayette Ambulance Service.
