DES MOINES - Iowa Gov. Chet Culver said today Republican presidential nominee John McCain's opposition to the most recent farm bill and his resistance to government support of ethanol won't play well with Iowans when McCain makes a campaign stop in Des Moines Tuesday.
"We're subsidizing oil, gas and coal companies to the tune of tens of billions of dollars a year. He supports that," Culver said of McCain. "Yet he doesn't want to support our farmers in rural Iowa and America when it comes to finding alternatives to imported petroleum."
McCain plans to host a roundtable discussion on the economy in Des Moines on Tuesday.
Culver, a Democrat, told reporters he's pressing Democratic nominee Barack Obama and running mate Joe Biden to pay another visit to the state before the Nov. 4 general election.
"I'll continue to do what I can to urge both Sen. Obama and Sen. Biden to spend as much time as possible here in the next 36 days," Culver said.
Biden visited Iowa earlier this month, and Obama's most recent stop in the state was in late August.
A representative from the McCain campaign was not immediately available for response today.
