BLAINE, Minn. (AP) - An autistic 5-year-old girl was found dead in a pond Thursday afternoon after she wandered away from home.
Police said Kaylie Dickerson's body was discovered around 3:45 p.m. in the retention pond about 300 feet from her home.
"It was the worst of all possible endings," Blaine Police Chief Dave Johnson said.
Kaylie's mother reported her missing about 1:15 p.m. The girl's home had numerous devices meant to alert her parents if she left, but she somehow managed to get out anyway, police said.
"It appears that she got out of the house without her mom knowing, despite all of the precautions the family had taken to make sure she could not wander away," Johnson said.
