WATERLOO -- Carl R. Black of Sacramento, Calif., left $167,000 to the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Dollars for Scholars chapter in his will through the Community Foundation of Northeast Iowa.

The Carl R. Black Memorial Dollars for Scholars Fund has been established as a permanent endowment to provide scholarships to students.

Black graduated from West Waterloo High School in 1934. He played football and attributed much of his success in life to his coach, Gordon Meeter.

Black was one of 10 children, and his family struggled during the Great Depression. Black said Meeter "made him feel he was special" and always made sure he had a good meal before a football game.

"This is why I am leaving money for scholarships to students at West High School," he once said.

Eunice Arrowsmith, trustee of Black's estate, remembers him as a wealthy man, but frugal.

Donations to the Carl R. Black Memorial Dollars for Scholars Fund are tax deductible. Gifts are also eligible for an additional Endow Iowa 20 percent state tax credit.

To make a donation to the Carl R. Black Memorial Dollars for Scholars Fund, call the Community Foundation office at (319) 287-9106 or donate online at www.cfneia.org.

The Community Foundation is a permanent, growing endowment built by gifts both large and small from individuals, families, organizations and businesses.
