WAYLAND, MO. - A former Waterloo woman died Friday while returning to Iowa for a high school reunion.
Pamela (Moran) Lujan, 47, of Clarksville, Tenn., had been to her 20th and 25th Central High reunions and was looking forward to the 30-year get-together last Saturday, said her sister, Lisa Casey.
Lujan was traveling with a friend when her Honda Civic was hit head-on by a vehicle driven by a woman from Keosauqua, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
The accident happened around 7:50 a.m. Friday on Missouri Highway 27 two miles south of Wayland.
The driver of the other vehicle, 49-year-old Holly Pratt, was heading south when she apparently lost control, crossed the center lane and collided with Lujan's Civic.
Pratt and Lujan's friend, 56-year-old Sheryl Demott of Nashville, Tenn., were flown to Blessing Hospital in nearby Quincy, Ill., according to the highway patrol.
A passenger in Pratt's vehicle, Gayle Hervey, 42, was treated at a Keokuk hospital for minor injuries.
Lujan was pronounced dead at 8:10 a.m.
Pratt was issued a summons for failure to drive on right side of the road resulting in an accident.
Lujan had used different routes during other journeys to Iowa, taking roads through Illinois instead of Missouri, Casey said. She wasn't sure why she altered her path this time.
Born and raised in Waterloo, Lujan served four years in the U.S. Army after high school and moved to Tennessee about 12 years ago, her sister said.
She worked for the state government and was set to receive a college degree Monday, Casey said.
Lujan had two children, a son, 22, and a daughter, 19.
