WATERLOO - The city's Planning, Programming and Zoning Commission will shrink if an ordinance is approved this week.
City Council members are scheduled to vote Monday on whether to cut the size of the commission from 13 to nine members.
The proposal would include six members appointed by the mayor with council approval and three standing seats for representatives of Waterloo Community Schools, the Human Rights Commission and Community Development Board.
Councilman Reggie Schmitt, the liaison to the zoning commission, initially proposed cutting the commission to seven members without the standing board seats as voting members. The shift to nine members was endorsed by a majority of council members during a work session last week.
The large size of the commission is seen by some as unwieldy.
Other scheduled council business includes:
An adjustment to a dangerous dog ordinance adding more penalties for pet owners violating the two strikes rule. A person who has twice been convicted of dangerous dog violations is barred from owning dogs.
The change spells out a $500 fine and allows for the confiscation of future dogs the individual harbors.
Approval of city property and liability insurance coverage renewals for the fiscal year starting July 1.
Bids were taken before the flood damage claims under the existing policy, and the premiums for the current year are up less than 1 percent.
Approval of a contract with Midwest Janitorial Service of Hiawatha to clean city buildings until July 2009.
The company was called in to replace Marsden Building Maintenance after the city cancelled that firm's contract "because of theft and nonperformance in a few areas," according to Building Maintenance Superintendent Louis Cutwright.
The meeting is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Monday in the council chambers on the second floor of City Hall.
Committee meetings include Boards and Commissions, 4:50 p.m.; Human Resources, 4:55 p.m.; and Finance, 5 p.m.
