WATERLOO -- Get ready for a wet and wild weekend as the Waterhawks Ski Team hosts its 50th anniversary celebration Aug. 22-24 at Eagle Lake.
"This will be a good event," said Sara Ehrig, the public relations director for the Waterhawks. "This will be the first ever night show performed in Iowa."
Deb Landau, business manager for the Waterhawks, said there were some new challenges and safety concerns to consider when putting together the night show. Special lighting, including body lights, will be used to illuminate each performer in case of a fall so that the person will be seen in the water.
"We've been in the area a long time," Landau said. "Hopefully new people will come to this for the night show and many will say 'Wow, they've been here this long and I've never been to see them.' Hopefully this will make people realize we are around."
With more than 100 members, the Waterhawks are one of the most active ski teams in the state of Iowa. Throughout the summer the team does a number of home shows, as well as regional and national competitions. The show team recently finished ninth at nationals.
The club was organized in September 1958 with 16 charter members who had an interest in promoting skiing safety, boating and family fun on the water. In addition to their performances, the club holds regular "Learn to Ski" days and group activity days.
This weekend, Ehrig said the Waterhawks will hold events for every type of skier and spectator. The show team will be performing night shows on Friday and Saturday. Live music will begin at 8 p.m. A live show will be performed under the lights once darkness falls.
A three-event tournament will be held Saturday and Sunday with events including trick, slalom and jumping. Those interested in the three-event activities can watch or participate in the two-day tournament.
On Sunday, there will be an alumni reunion from 4 to 6 p.m. The regular weekly show will follow, beginning at 6 p.m.
Admission for spectators is free for the tournaments and $5 for the night shows.
