Fair holding hazardous materials dropoff

WATERLOO - - The Black Hawk County Solid Waste Management Commission will be partnering with Cedar Falls Utilities to sponsor the Energy and Environmental Fair and free household hazardous materials dropoff.

The event will be held on Saturday from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. at Cedar Falls Utilities. This entire event is open to all Black Hawk County residents.

Participants can enjoy free food, door prizes and a live broadcast from radio station KCVM Mix 96.

Kids' activities include riding the recycled Smiley Train, bouncing in the solar powered inflatable bouncy tents, and visiting a railroad engine and caboose to learn about railroad crossing safety. Building specialists also will be available to answer questions.

Other activities will include demonstrations of environmentally friendly practices and touring the interactive Iowa Department of Natural Resources Mobile Education Trailer to learn about the proper management of hazardous materials found in the home.

The Black Hawk County Solid Waste Management Commission will be accepting residential hazardous materials at the free drop-off site in conjunction with the fair. Items such as lawn chemicals, old cleaners, rechargeable batteries, compact fluorescent light bulbs, aerosol cans and much more will be accepted for safe disposal.

No paint, automotive products or business waste of any kind will be accepted during the event.
