EVANSDALE - The tires squeal, and the engines rev, but if there's a crash, don't hold your breath for an injury.
That's because you'd need a shrinking machine to get anybody into the driver's seat of these radio controlled cars, and the thousands of dollars the drivers put into their vehicles can only go so far.
On Saturday and Sunday, spectators can see just how far that really is as Extreme RC, 202 Gilbert Drive, Evansdale, is hosting an RC Pro Series Race on its outdoor track.
The race is round two of three for the North Division of the pro circuit, which includes surrounding Midwestern states like Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and Minnesota. There are seven divisions in the U.S. and each has three rounds that help determine who moves on to nationals.
Through Tuesday, Extreme RC co-owner Deb Hess had received 101 entries, and she expects that number to shoot up to 150-175 before the event.
"People are coming in from any Midwest area, and there are a lot of local drivers too," said Hess.
There are six categories for competitors to enter, including expert and intermediate 1/8 scale buggy, expert and intermediate arena truck, monster truck and gas truck.
Hess explained that the big attraction for most drivers is the buggy races.
"1/8 buggy is definitely the most popular, but arena isn't too far behind that," she said.
Big names already confirmed for the event are Steve Hale, Denny Rhoads and Stringbean, all from Missouri. In the first round of the North Division, which took place April 28-29 in Pleasant Hill, Mo., Hale finished third in the expert 1/8 buggy, Rhoads won the monster truck and Stringbean took the crown in intermediate 1/8 buggy and intermediate arena truck.
According to Hess, it's also possible that Taylor James and Jared Tebo may show up for the event.
James and Tebo, also both of Missouri, finished first and second in the expert 1/8 buggy in April. In addition, Tebo took first in gas truck, and James won the arena truck race.
The event is free for spectators, and there will be food vendors on hand.
Racing starts at 8 a.m. on Saturday and will run until 9 or 10 p.m. before picking up again at 8 a.m. Sunday.
Qualifying races run on Saturday and into Sunday if needed with the finals to follow for the remainder of the day.
