WATERLOO -- A local physician has received zoning approval for a new clinic and office development east of Logan Plaza.
Waterloo City Council members unanimously approved the request from Dr. Kalyana Sundaram to rezone 6.5 acres of land on the northeast corner of Donald and East Fourth streets for the medical building and several additional lots to be developed in the future.
There were no objections to the project during a public hearing.
"It's a great development for an area that needs it," said Mayor Tim Hurley.
Members of the city's Planning, Programming and Zoning Commission unanimously endorsed the zoning change for the property, which had been the subject of controversial zoning requests in the past. A low-income apartment complex had been proposed for the land and it was rezoned two years ago for an elderly housing project, which never materialized.
While the new "R-4" zoning designation allows a number of types of projects, including apartments, the council included a condition on the zoning change that only medical and professional offices are allowed on the site.
In other business, council members approved:
-- Resolutions of support for two projects applying for Low-Income Housing Tax Credits through the Iowa Finance Authority, which increase the projects' chances of getting the tax credits in IFA's competitive application process. The projects are Remington Farms, a 38-home rental development behind the Crossroads SuperTarget, and Whitman Point, a 50- to 60-unit assisted living center for seniors in the 1100 block of Flammang Drive, across from GMAC Mortgage.
-- Spending $103,400 to buy a new Zamboni ice resurfacing machine for Young Arena from Zamboni Co., of Paramount, Calif.
