CEDAR FALLS -- A Navy recruiter has been indicted on federal child pornography charges.

Brian Christopher Hoover, 31 and of Cedar Falls, was in U.S. District Court in Cedar Rapids Thursday for an initial appearance on charges of attempted receipt of child porn and attempted possession of child porn.

He pleaded not guilty to both charges.

The court ordered he be detained, and a Feb. 5 trial date was set.

The grand jury indictment, which was unsealed Thursday, alleges Hoover attempted to receive child pornography through the mail in October and November.

The investigation was worked by the United States Postal Service as part of the Project Safe Childhood initiative.

If convicted, Hoover faces five to 20 years in prison, a $500,000 fine.
