WATERLOO - Trial for a Waterloo man accused of killing his infant son has been postponed.
Antwuan Demon Williams Sr., 22, had been scheduled to go before a jury on a charge of first-degree murder in August.
But on Friday, the court moved the date to Dec. 9 to allow the defense more time to prepare.
Williams waved to family members during the hearing and confirmed for the judge that he wanted the trial delayed.
Williams was arrested after paramedics and police found his 8-month-old son, Antwuan Jr., unresponsive in their Broadway Street home in February.
The child later died, and doctors found signs of abuse, court records state.
In other developments, a judge terminated the parental rights of Williams and his wife, Tiara Williams, to the other two children they have - Antwuan Jr.'s twin sister Auqusia and older sister Z'iarah, 2.
Tiara Williams didn't contest the action, but Antwuan Williams Sr. fought it during a June 27 hearing.
Judge Stephen Clarke ordered the termination in a ruling July 2, court records show.
"The acts and/or omissions of these parents with respect to the care of their children have resulted in multiple injuries to two of the children and the death of a third," Clarke ruled.
"The further offer or receipt of services will not correct the conditions which led to the abuse of these children with a reasonable period of time," the ruling states.
The two girls were placed with the Iowa Department of Human Services for adoption placement. They will remain in foster care pending adoption.
DHS officials had been involved with Z'iarah Williams before the twins were born.
She was removed from the home in September 2006 - when she was 3 months old - after doctors found a fresh spiral facture to her leg and signs of healing fractures to each leg and arm, court records state.
The parents participated in services over the following months. They suggested Z'iarah's injuries were inflicted by Tiara Williams' sister, according to records.
The twins were born in June 2007, and the parents passed police polygraph exams.
Z'iarah was returned Jan. 3, 2008, under DHS supervision, following a successful 30-day trial home visit.
A month later, Antwuan Jr. was found unconscious with "multiple fractures, bruises and/or bite marks," and the children were removed.
A subsequent exam of the girls found "non-accidental injuries, including fractures and bite marks," records state.
During an earlier hearing, the court noted a doctor's observation that the mother should have been aware of the injuries.
