RAYMOND - One person was airlifted from a three-vehicle accident near here Friday afternoon, and five others were taken by ambulance to area hospitals.
Rachelle Nolan of Jesup was airlifted by AirCare to Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo following the collision. She was trapped in her vehicle and had to be extricated by the Jesup Fire Department. She was still being evaluated in the hospital's emergency room at 6 p.m., a nursing supervisor said.
Black Hawk County sheriff's deputies said a truck heading south on Canfield Road ran a stop sign or failed to yield the right-of-way at Dubuque Road about 1 p.m., colliding with an eastbound van driven by Nolan. Nolan did not have a stop sign. Richard Ferwalt of Ash Grove, Mo., was driving the truck.
One or both of the vehicles then continued on and collided with a Jeep that was stopped at the stop sign, deputies said. The Jeep was driven by Rita Bader of Eagan, Minn.
Bader was transported to Allen Hospital by Dunkerton Ambulance. A nursing supervisor could not be reached to check her condition. Four young children in Nolan's van were transported by Jesup Ambulance to Covenant Medical Center. The sheriff's department did not provide the children's names. The Covenant nursing supervisor said one of the children was admitted to the hospital.
Ferwalt, who was not injured in the accident, was cited for failure to stop, or yield the right-of-way from a stop sign.
Additional agencies assisting the sheriff's department included Jesup and Evansdale police and the Iowa State Patrol.
