WATERLOO - A local business leader has joined the Republican ticket in a bid for the Black Hawk County Board of Supervisors.

Andy Mullinex, co-owner of Impact Marketing Technologies in Waterloo, was nominated at the GOP county convention and filed appropriate papers last week to be on the Nov. 4 general election ballot for the county office.

"I'm a local business advocate," said the 37-year-old Elk Run Heights resident. "I'm involved in a lot of things with the business community.

"I want to make sure that every vote cast (by the board) doesn't negatively impact local jobs, local business and the local economy," he added. "Local business is the lifeblood of our community."

Mullinex joins incumbent supervisor Scott Jordan on the Republican ticket for the Board of Supervisors. Jordan was the only candidate in the Republican primary in June, but the law allows the county party to fill out the ballot slots through a convention. The third open GOP supervisor nomination remained vacant.

Mullinex is a lifelong resident of the county, having graduated from East High School and the University of Northern Iowa.

He is heavily involved in the Greater Cedar Valley Chamber of Commerce, chairing the committee for the organization's annual event. He also is a member of Ducks Unlimited, serving on the Cedar Falls Ducks Unlimited committee raising funds for wetlands.

On the political front, the supervisor candidacy is Mullinex's first bid for public office.

He said he is interested in focusing on improving and maintaining rural roads.

"I'm also real big on budget and fiscal accountability," he said, "making sure everything is where it should be."

Mullinex also vowed to do his homework.

"I'll make a commitment I'll never cast an uneducated vote when I'm elected to the board," he said. "I'll educate myself about all aspects of an issue when it comes before the board."

The local Democrat slate includes incumbent supervisors John Miller and Tom Little, along with Michael Blackwell.
