FAYETTE - Police and sheriff's deputies last week arrested a federal fugitive at a college basketball game.
Authorities found Albert Garcia, 49, of Minnetonka, Minn., a lawyer under indictment on drug charges, Tuesday at Upper Iowa University. He was at a women's basketball game, and officials received a tip from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
Garcia was taken into custody without incident by officers with the Fayette County Sheriff's Office and Fayette Police Department.
Garcia reportedly has a relative at the school.
Authorities held Garcia at the Fayette County Jail until Friday when the U.S. Marshal's Service took him into custody.
Garcia is awaiting trial in U.S. District Court in Minnesota on charges of conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine and cocaine and possession of meth with intent to distribute.
He was first arrested in February in Anoka County, Minn., on allegations he accepted meth and a motorcycle for legal fees while representing a man facing federal drug charges, according to the Pioneer Press newspaper in St. Paul, Minn. State charges were dismissed in June, but Garcia and an employee were indicted on federal charges in October, according to court records.
The indictment alleges Garcia and others conspired to distribute more than 5 grams of meth and an unspecified amount of cocaine between 2001 and February 2009 in Minnesota. Authorities also allege he possessed more than 5 grams of meth on Feb. 25, 2009.
Facing up to 80 years in prison, Garcia posted $25,000 bond and was allowed to remain free while his trial was pending. But on Nov. 3, he allegedly violated terms of his release when he was cited by police in Minnetonka for driving while suspended, according to court records.
Garcia also was arrested in August for allegedly sexually assaulting a woman who was seeking legal services at his law office in 2008 in Minneapolis, according to court records.
