WATERLOO - Tierra Cannon has been selected as the Youth of the Year for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Black Hawk County.

She is among hundreds of local Youths of the Year across the country aiming to become the National Youth of the Year. Being named Youth of the Year is the highest honor a Boys & Girls Club member can receive.

Cannon attends Central Middle School. Last fall, she was chosen to perform the Destiny's Child song "Stand Up for Love" at the Boys & Girls Club Regional Conference. Her performance earned her a standing ovation from Boys & Girls Club leadership professionals in attendance at the conference.

"Tierra is a leader at the club. She is very involved in many of our programs and is an extremely talented young lady, who will be successful in life," said Jason Barta, executive director of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Black Hawk County.

She will compete against other Boys & Girls Club members for the Iowa Youth of the Year title this week in Des Moines and a $1,000 scholarship. State winners then compete for the title of Midwest Regional Youth of the Year and a $10,000 scholarship.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Black Hawk County has locations in Waterloo, Cedar Falls (North Cedar Elementary) and Evansdale (Poyner Elementary) and offers after-school programs to youths, ages 6-18. Membership dues are $10 for the school year.
