OELWEIN - Discs will replace dimpled balls at a tournament at Edgewater Golf Course next month.
The first ever Hub City Open disc golf tournament will be Oct. 17. The 18-hole tournament is aiming to draw people into the sport and to show off a new disc golf course in Platte Park.
"I think there are some people in our community who don't know we have it," said Jessica Burkhart, the wellness coordinator for the city parks and recreation department.
The event was started by Generation Oelwein, a new community service group in town. Both the Edgewater course and the one at Platte Park will be used. Higher level players will use the golf course, while amateurs will be at the park. The 18-hole tournament is expected to draw from around the state and beyond, including professional players.
Platte has 18 holes of disc golf, but only nine actual baskets - which function like the cup in golf. The Edgewater course will be retrofitted for the baskets.
Adam Olsen, a tournament organizer from Cedar Rapids, said Iowa ranks high in the disc golf world. The state is second only to Texas in the number in courses in the country, and tournaments occur nearly every weekend.
"I would say it is big," Olsen said.
The tournament will function similar to standard golf tournaments, with two rounds of play and the ranks determined by those with the lowest scores.
In the future, Oelwein officials hope to set up a larger disc course at City Park to accommodate high levels of play.
