WATERLOO - A Waterloo man who is suing the city and county over a scuffle with officers in 2008 has been arrested on drug charges.
Police said Ramarez Maurice Gary, 25, was a passenger in a Chrysler Sebring in which they found two large bags of marijuana following a traffic stop Tuesday night.
Gary, of 1437 Vine St., and the vehicle's driver, Chakila Chevelle Wright, 22, of 1725 Linden Ave., were arrested for possession of marijuana with intent to deliver in proximity of a park and violation of the drug tax stamp act.
According to court records, officers spotted the Sebring going 37 mph in a 30 mph zone and called a drug detection dog after stopping the vehicle at Lafayette and Vinton streets.
The dog indicated there was an odor of narcotics, and police found the bags of marijuana under the driver's seat. Officers allege Gary also gave Wright two other bags to hide in her pants.
Both Gary and Wright were released from jail after posting bond Wednesday morning.
In October, Gary filed a lawsuit against the city of Waterloo, Black Hawk County, Allen Hospital and others in connection with injuries he suffered while at the hospital July 5, 2008.
Gary and others had gathered at Allen following a shooting, and officers broke up the crowd and told people to leave the area. Gary later returned and was arrested on misdemeanor charges.
According to Gary's lawsuit, a Waterloo officer and a sheriff's deputy who was working security at Allen hit his head into a car and then slammed him face first into parking lot, scraping his head into the pavement during the arrest.
The suit in pending in U.S. District Court in Cedar Rapids.
