WATERLOO - A man on trial for allegedly giving runaway teenagers methampethamine and forcing one of them to have sex said he's innocent.
David Edward Bruce, 45, of Swaledale, took the stand Thursday after prosecutors rested their case.
Authorities said Bruce knew one of the girls and picked them up in Cedar Falls after they ran away from the Iowa Juvenile Home in Toledo in August 2007.
He took them to the Ramada Inn in Waterloo where he rented rooms. The girls said he loaded meth into a pipe and gave it to the 17-year-old girl he knew, who then shared with her friend.
Later that night he allegedly had sexual contact with the 17 year old.
On the stand, Bruce admitted his used meth and took the girls to the motel.
But he denied giving them drugs and having sex.
He told jurors he had taken some sleeping pills and took a nap in the motel room. He then awoke to a sexual climax and saw the 17-year-old girl had her hand in his pants, he said.
According to Bruce's account, the girl asked him to have sex, but he declined and left the room.
He testified he returned hours later, noticed some of this meth was missing and later took part in a plot to have police find and detain the runaways.
Bruce said the girls were upset with him when they realized he tipped off officers.
The other girl also testified Thursday.
She said Bruce never made an advance on her while they were at the motel but said she woke up in the night and saw Bruce on top of her friend.
Defense attorney Russell Schroeder questioned her about hallucinations she had in the past.
"I have no doubt that it was reality," the girl said. "I wasn't sleeping. I wasn't hallucinating … I knew he was on top of her … I knew what he was doing," she said.
Michael Schmit, a criminalist with the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation Lab, told jurors semen found with the 17 year old matched Bruce's DNA profile. He said the match was common in 1 of 100 billion unrelated people.
The trial continues today in Black Hawk County District Court.
