CEDAR FALLS - Administrators from the University of Northern Iowa will spend much of Tuesday in the community talking education, economics and outreach.

The university is hosting a Community Visit Day, which includes trips to George Washington Carver Academy and Black Hawk Elementary School in Waterloo and meetings with several area business and education leaders.

The event dates back to at least the 1990s, however, the scope of the day's events was cut along with the budget in early 2000.

"Even though the budget picture is still tight, the president wanted to do some visits this fall to really engage Iowans more with the university's programs and services," said Stacey Christensen, the university's community relations manager.

The UNI Alumni Association also is hosting a canned food drive for the Northeast Iowa Food Bank in conjunction with the Community Day. Donations can be dropped off through Tuesday at Hy-Vee and the UNI Alumni House, 1012 W. 23rd St.

Small-business owners and those interested in starting a business are also invited to the Cedar Valley EntreBash & Small Business Expo from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at George Washington Carver Academy in Waterloo.
