WATERLOO - The girl squealed with delight, holding up her find in triumph: An edition of People magazine featuring stories on the late Michael Jackson and Farrah Fawcett. Browsing through stacks of discounted magazines at the Waterloo Public Library's book store apparently had paid off, said volunteer Troyce Vich, who observed the scene.
The young patron also was impressed that the magazine was selling for an affordable 25 cents, added Vich, a book shop volunteer and member of Friends of the Library.
On Tuesday, Friends of the Library held a grand opening for Book ReView, a volunteer-run shop that sells books, magazines and movies. The shop, which opened a little more than a month ago, is located inside the Waterloo Public Library. Sales raise money for library programming and materials, volunteers said.
"Extras that they don't have the money for," said Sarah Yagla, president of the Friends of the Library board. The volunteer organization raises funds for the Waterloo library and its programs.
"And that's the fun part, to get them some extra items that don't fit in the budget," Yagla added.
Volunteers run the shop, which is on the west side of the library and is accessible from indoors. On Tuesday, they handed out cookies and juice and rang up sales. The event included prize give-aways and a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
"It's been busy all day," said Sheri Melby, library marketing and volunteer service coordinator.
Cook books and self-help books, political commentaries and paperback mysteries lined dozens of shelves. The inventory is either donated from residents or comes from the library's collection, Vich said. She hopes to expand the children's collection in the book shop through donations.
Book ReView regular Pam Terrell of Waterloo has no trouble finding texts that suit her tastes. Terrell makes a point to visit the shop every week, combing the shelves for a stories by a favorite author, Mary Higgins Clark, Janet Evanovich or perhaps Michael Connelly.
"I like mysteries and histories and suspense and things that have a little edge," Terrell said. "Not much for romance."
On Tuesday, the retired teacher already had taken one load to the car and was back for more. She said she's been known to purchase several dozen titles at once.
"I'm a book lover," Terrell added. "I read all the time and this is a great, cheap place to buy books."
Friends of the Library traditionally raised funds through quarterly books sales, Yagla said. Volunteers also experimented with running a much smaller book shop at various locations within the library. The Book ReView devotes more space to the concept, she added.
The Book ReView will be open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesdays and from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday. Donations will be accepted during regular library hours.
