CEDAR FALLS - The city keeps moving forward on plans to build a northern industrial park as soon as possible.

On Tuesday, the City Council approved closing on a 103-acre property off of Leversee Road for a new industrial park.

The city will pay Jerell and Linda Janssen $640,000 for the property.

The park would have an estimated 20 lots when finished.

Initial grading work could begin this fall, with lots possibly available in 2010.

The city would construct a rail spur to connect with existing railroads. Already some companies have expressed interest in locating in the park.

"It's no secret the co-op, which was damaged in the flood, is interested in moving out there," said Mayor Jon Crews.

Crews was referring to the Hudson Co-Op, located on Lincoln Street.

"The co-op and two other businesses related to the co-op are excited about the rail transport and are interested in moving out there as well," said Ron Gaines, city director of developmental services.

The city still needs to rezone part of the property, establish a tax increment financing district and approve a plat.
